Elderly LaSalle woman really needs a hand.  She has tall windows to clean and is banned from a ladder.  (Of course, this spunky gal was able to strip and stain her floors.)  She's a wonderful woman who hates to ask for help...but has no other choice.

Remember:  In the same degree you are helpful, you will be happy!

Call the United Way for more information 815 223-8339.

On June 21 – the longest day of the year – United Ways across the country will be participating in a nationwide Day of Action. With more daylight hours than any other, June 21 is the perfect day to let  actions speak louder than words. It’s the perfect way to show, by example, what it means to LIVE UNITED.

 According to UW Worldwide:  "
We will declare our intention to improve lives in measurable and lasting ways by mobilizing thousands of people around a common goal: advancing the common good by focusing on education, income and health. These are the building blocks for a good life — a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health."

We would appreciate feedback and ideas on how the United Way of Illinois Valley can take part in this national program.  United Way Worldwide requests that EVERY United Way take part in the Day of Action.  Now is the time to start planning - and that is why we are asking for suggestions.  Below are some ideas used in other areas.  Read the list and see if anything captures your attention.

We are looking for chairmen and volunteers - will you and/or your group be able to help?  Give us a call at 815 223-8339 or send us an email at jan.liveunited@sbcglobal.net  We look forward to hearing from you!

1.   Spring into action - clean your community!  Organize a community-wide clean-up day - starting with roads.  Don't let litter be the first thing visitors see!
2.   Recycle cans - community-wide!  Organize a can drive in all local communities on June 21 - can be done in conjunction with clean-up day.
3.   Stuff backpacks with school supplies and deliver them to the United Way in conjunction with their annual HUSKY drive for area schools.
4.   Collect new or gently used professional clothing to an organization assisting individuals seeking employment.
5.   Plan a summer jobs fair for high school students and offer tips on job preparation and interview skills.
6.   Organize a field day or health fair with a local school or your neighborhood to get kids active and exercising.
7.   Take friends with you to give blood.
8.   Start a walking group for friends, families, neighbors and/or community members that meets regularly at a set time and location.
9.   Create care packages for overseas military personnel.
10.  Start a vegetable garden and donate part of your harvest to a food pantry.
